Mount Yotei is affectionately known as Ezo Fuji and is recognized as one of Hokkaido’s most iconic peaks and one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains. This graceful stratovolcano has an oval summit crater approximately 2 km in circumference, and its resemblance to Mount Fuji inspired the name Ezo Fuji. From early July to early August, more than 100 species of alpine plants bloom at elevations above 1,700 m. The mountain is also home to more than 130 species of wild birds. Its pristine natural environment is protected, while the area is also enjoyed for outdoor recreation such as mountain climbing and nature observation.
